6 Weeks Report card
In the education system I grew up in report cards came out every six weeks. I think a lot of systems these days go by 9 weeks, but I'm not sure. Point being, it is time for Elijah's report card.
Sleeping
C
The first two and a half weeks he slept like a champ. I thought this parenting stuff was going to be a cake walk. Well maybe a cake walk on a rickety bridge but it appeared the sleeping problem wasn't going to be one we would have too much trouble with. Boy was I wrong. The following week he was a nightmare. He cried and screamed at the top of his lungs for hours on end in the middle of the night. I'm still not sure what was upsetting him. I thought he must have colic, but after a week it stopped and he went back to sleeping. Unfortunately in our attempts to sooth him he got use to sleeping on us. We managed to eventually break that by teaching him to soothe himself with a paci instead of our warm body. This I could live with, but the darn thing wont stay in his mouth. If it falls out before he's been a sleep for a while he'll start fussing until you shove it back in. He often only manages to keep it in for 5 to 10 minutes. We still haven't really fixed this problem, but you can only do so much at this age. The past two nights he's been real fussy from 8 to 12. I haven't been able to figure this one out either. All those books and none of their suggestions seem to work out so great. Hopefully it's just another short phase.
Head Control
A
I'm not entirely sure whats normal for a baby at this age but Elijah seems to be doing great. He can hold his head up for fairly decent lengths of time. I wouldn't leave him in a position where he needed to hold it up himself or anything but I'm pleased with what I see.
Tracking
B+
I almost gave him an A. He does seem to track things pretty well with his eyes a lot of the time, but he doesn't do it every time. Maybe this is because he's no trick pony and he's just not interested in what I'm waiving in front of his face. He does really seem to be into colorful pictures and such so thats good.
Feeding
A
Perhaps Morgan would be the better person to grade him here, but he seems to eat well. He's a good latcher with a good suckle. He's become a little chunk, right now he's working on chin number 3. I'm not sure what his weight is at, probably between 10 and 11 lbs. The only thing keeping him from an A+ is sometimes he unlatches in a rough manner.
I'm trying to think of other subjects but those are the only ones that come to mind. What can I say? You can't expect much out of a newborn. Minus a little fussyness (and what babies aren't fussy at times?) he's a really good kid. I think he's developing pretty well. Morgan will tell you he's starting to develope a social smile, but I haven't really seen it yet. Unfortunately though, the past two nights I've just come home to a Mr. Cranky Pants and the only thing I've really seen is cry baby.

5 Random Things
I stole this idea from Danny. I figured I needed to give him a mention since he’s plugged our blog a couple times so in honor of you here are my 5 random things.
1. I have a friend named Danny. He’s really cool. You should check out his blog www.blog-of-danny.blogspot.com
2. Elijah weighed 9lbs 10oz on Saturday which means he’s probably closer to 9lbs 14oz by now. He’s a little chunk. Not really, he’s putting on the average amount of weight. They grow up so fast *tear* He’s starting to outgrow all his newborn clothes. We still try to cram him in them sometimes though.
3. We’ve been watching a ton of movies lately due to the fact that we have a newborn and its winter. Unfortunately we have hit a string of really bad movies. The only one that was any good was the Illusionist. It’s a little different and very clever, you should check it out.
4. I just finished reading Stolen Lives. I’d tell you the author but I don’t remember the name. It’s a true story about a girl who was adopted by the king of Morocco to be his daughter’s playmate. Her real father was a very powerful man in the Moroccan government as well (head of the army) and eventually tried to over throw the king. In retaliation the King kills him and throws his wife and all the children in prison. Including the one that he helped raised. They’re held captive for 20 years before finally set free. It’s an excellent book. Sucks that it’s true.
5. Elijah is still sleeping pretty well at night, WooHoo! Unfortunately it’s only if he’s sleeping on one of us. I’m pretty against co sleeping so I intend to try and correct this soon. It appears that placing him on his stomach to sleep may work, but they recommend “back to sleep” until the baby is 3 months old. Although when he sleeps on us he’s on his stomach.. oh the dilemma. Last time I tried to fix it he didn’t sleep for a week afterwards. I don’t know if one had anything to do with the other, but it’s surely something that concerns me.

Hooray!
So exciting... Last night Elijah slept for the first time in over a week!!! No crying, no fussing when going to sleep. And he only woke up once to eat in the middle of the night. We're still working on getting him to sleep on his own..he slept part of the night on Morgan, part of the night on Bruce...but at least he SLEPT in the night time. He does okay going down for naps during the day on his own..but it's like he knows when we're tired and wanting to go to bed. For those of you who don't know, Elijah spent the last week literally screaming inconsolably through much of the night, and when he wasn't screaming he was awake wanting attention. This leaves a very tired mom and dad! This is a pic of the only way Elijah will sleep at night most of the time.

Bath time
Elijah in his ducky outfit after bath time. We're so happy that he enjoys baths now that he can be submerged under water. He likes to have warm water run over him..very soothing. Below is Elijah in his pj's after his bath, warm and cozy. Too bad it doesn't keep him from crying for 3 hours a night. :-/

Scooter
We found Elijah in the crib like this after his nap. His head is usually at the top of the mat..somehow he worked his way down to the bottom. Guess we better watch out in the future..we've got quite a mover!

Bruce and Elijah were talking to Gramma on the webcam and I snapped this cute pic of them just hanging out, enjoying being father and son.

Looks Like Dad

Just a comparison of my photo as a newborn against Elijah's. I think he looks like his daddy. I don't know if thats the best picture for the comparison, but it'll do for now.

Happy New Year!!
Our little Elijah is wishing you and your family a happy new year! He went to his first party of the year at Steph and Adam's place. He stayed awake from 12-2am to party. He's already becoming quite the party animal.
Enjoying the festivities!
